Twice in his life, Sam Finkel, LAW ’23, dealt with major setbacks that derailed his dreams of playing, then coaching, football. But Sam found a new path forward at Temple Law, combining mathematical acumen with a passion for athletics to launch a promising career as an attorney. Sam now works with professional athletes and entertainers as an associate at Fox Rothschild, securing his clients fair compensation and helping them navigate contract disputes and even immigration proceedings.

Beasley Professor Ken Jacobsen, who teaches sports law, proved to be an invaluable mentor, allowing Sam to create his own coursework crafting mathematical algorithms to determine an athlete’s fair compensation. Sam also started a Sports Law Negotiation Team at Temple that still competes across the country and leveraged a Temple connection to secure a key internship with the Philadelphia Eagles news website Inside the Birds, where he still writes and co-hosts his own podcast segment Inside the Data with Geoff Mosher.

Sam went pro as an attorney for Fox Rothschild immediately after graduation at the firm’s Center City office, building on a summer associate role that he obtained a year earlier. In his first two years, Sam helped international athletes obtain green cards, successfully represented a prominent sports agent in a contract dispute, and secured and negotiated NIL (name, image, likeness) deals for clients in both sports and music. He’s next eyeing a certification that would allow him to directly represent athletes in contract negotiations with professional teams.

Backbreaking letdowns. In high school, Sam harbored ambitions to play college football before a broken vertebrae prematurely ended his playing career. Still, he attended Penn State University for undergrad and obtained an internship with the football program, eventually catching the eyes of then-Nittany Lions Head Coach James Franklin. Sam rose to the position of assistant quarterback coach, where Franklin referred to his approach as “moneyball,” prompting him to learn advanced statistical analysis to gain a competitive edge.

Temple turnaround. Sam hoped to leverage his new skill set in a coaching position in North Carolina after graduation in 2020 but spent just a few weeks in the role before being furloughed due to the pandemic. He quickly called an audible, taking the LSATs and applying to Temple Law, earning a full Temple Law scholarship and enrolling in just weeks.

“One of the big things that I do is incorporate statistics into arguments, which is not common in the legal practice. I use z-scores to show statistical significance that proves someone is extraordinary.”
