The big picture. A daughter of Vietnamese and Chinese immigrants who prioritized financial security, Samantha K. Tan, TFM ’20, had a lot of convincing to do to win her parents’ support for pursuing a career in film. But success helps. Just four years out of college, Samantha has found her groove working for Reel Start, an L.A.-based entertainment nonprofit founded by filmmaker Evan Goldberg, while earning plaudits for her production work in Hollywood. An aspiring showrunner, Samantha is devoted to writing and producing narratives that empower underrepresented communities.

To her credit. Since moving to the City of Angels, Samantha has worked on popular Max (previously HBO) shows The Flight Attendant and The Sex Lives of College Girls, as well as various films, music videos, award-winning documentaries and shorts. One short she co-produced for Reel Start and Nickelodeon/Paramount, Tree’s Blood, starred Ayo Edebiri and Rose Byrne and won gold in the 2024 Anthem Awards. Ambitious, a web series Samantha executive produced and co-created, was accepted into the 2022 Sundance and The Asian American Foundation Fellowship and Scholarship program.

Giving back. During her day job at Reel Start, Samantha supports the organization’s mission to uplift marginalized young voices interested in film by giving them the opportunity to work with industry professionals on their creative ideas. It’s rewarding work but also offers creative opportunities: Samantha’s production work there has landed her credits with Goldberg and long-time writing partner Seth Rogen.

“The semester I was in Los Angeles was literally the best time ever. I learned so much about myself, and the industry, and work. I felt like I just really needed to be here.”

Gone Hollywood. During her senior year at Temple, Samantha was accepted into TFMA’s Los Angeles Study Away program, which sends students to L.A. for a semester. Despite being cut short by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Samantha says the experience was essential. Not only did she gain valuable real-world experience, but she also found an apartment to rent immediately after graduation, taking the proverbial “leap” and never looking back.

Temple connections. Samantha was inspired by the mentorship of Associate Professor Rea Tajiri, a fellow Asian American who Samantha says is a rarity in film production. Later, Tajiri connected Samantha to a production manager in L.A who gave her work during her semester away. In turn, Temple’s L.A. internship coordinator Amy Olk connected her to another alum and associate of Goldberg, helping her land the job with Reel Start. Temple professors Doug Claybourne and LeAnn Erickson also played a significant part in her producing and professional journey, she says.
